Richard has been in the film and television industry for over twenty five years.

Starting out in 1996 as a staff camera trainee, then as a camera operator at the BBC studios in Shepherds Bush London and Manchester, he moved swiftly through the ranks until leaving to go freelance in 2001.

Working as an ‘A Camera’ and Steadicam Operator, he was fortunate enough to work with some inspiring directors and cinematographers whilst building a reputation for having a “Story is king” approach to each project.

Being an emphatic team leader, in 2013, Richard was asked to step up to Director of Photography on BBC 3’s BEING HUMAN, a show that he’d been the regular ‘A’ camera operator on. Enjoying the new role, he then went on to shoot the second block of the first season of BBC Wales’s HINTERLAND for which he won a BAFTA CYMRU for “PHOTOGRAPHY AND LIGHTING” and the GUILD OF TELEVISION CAMERAMEN’S “AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE”.

Whilst working on HINTERLAND, Richard met director, Gareth Bryn, who asked him to photograph his debut feature film THE PASSING. This earned him his second BAFTA CYMRU for “PHOTOGRAPHY AND LIGHTING”.

Regularly in demand as a cinematographer, Richard was asked to open BRASSIC, a SKY1 Comedy Drama with director Daniel ‘O’Hara.

Being involved in the embryonic stage of the series, he quickly became an invaluable asset to the show. As BRASSIC gained critical momentum, Richard’s loyalty and creativity were rewarded when an unexpected opportunity came along to direct the show.

Having directed the second block of season 4, the litmus test was in the result. He was quickly asked back to direct and open season 5 and received a BAFTA Cymru nomination (Season 4) for Best Director in the Fiction category. Season four also got nominated and went on to win an RTS award for best Comedy Drama.

With his passion for story telling, a real empathy for actors and wealth of technical and creative experience behind the camera, Richard is now on course to take the helm of many an exciting and creative project as lead Cinematographer or director.
